چکیده

Surfaces of dielectrics (insulators) often become charged following contact with metals, semiconductors, and dielectrics with or without rubbing. The mechanism and participants in the charge transfer (electrons or ions), although widely investigated, are still controversial. Whereas the identity of the charge carrier cannot be distinguished by electrostatic measurements, we have recently found that charges on a dielectric surface, e.g. for polymers like Teflon (polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE) and Lucite [poly(methylmethacrylate) or (PMMA)], can carry out different chemical redox reactions, e.g. metal deposition, ion reduction, and chemiluminescence. This suggests that electron transfer occurs in electrification. This chemical approach allows determination of the surface density of electronic charge as well as processes involved in charging and discharging the dielectrics. Electrostatic electrochemistry at insulators.

The identity of charges generated by contact electrification on dielectrics has remained unknown for centuries and the precise determination of the charge density is also a long-standing challenge. Here, electrostatic charges on Teflon (polytetrafluoroethylene) produced by rubbing with Lucite (polymethylmethacrylate) were directly identified as electrons rather than ions by electrochemical (red...

EFFECT OF ELECTRIC FIELD ON PD ACTIVITY AND DAMAGE INTO SOLID DIELECTRIC MATERIALS

Abstract – In this paper, the effect of applied electric field on the damage due to partial discharges activity into the surroundings dielectrics of a narrow channel encapsulated within the volume of a dielectric material is evaluated using a kinetic model based on Particle in Cell - Monte Carlo Collision (PIC-MCC) model. After application of an electric field across a dielectric material which...

Static Electrification of Teflon by Metals

SUMMARY The electrification of a system consisting of a metal and polytetrafluoro-ethylene (Teflon) has been investigated under relative motion. First, the electrification charge received by the insulator was measured when velocity, radius of curvature of the metal electrode and normal force were varied. The measure ments were performed both in atmospheric pressure and later under vacuum, since...

Nanocontact electrification: patterned surface charges affecting adhesion, transfer, and printing.

Contact electrification creates an invisible mark, overlooked and often undetected by conventional surface spectroscopic measurements. It impacts our daily lives macroscopically during electrostatic discharge and is equally relevant on the nanoscale in areas such as soft lithography, transfer, and printing. This report describes a new conceptual approach to studying and utilizing contact electr...

Electrostatic self-assembly of polystyrene microspheres by using chemically directed contact electrification.

Herein we describe a process—based on contact electrification and electrostatic interactions—that directs the selfassembly of chemically modified polystyrene microspheres to form three-dimensional microstructures. When two solid surfaces are brought into contact and separated, charge is often transferred from one surface to the other in a process known as contact electrification. 2] We can pred...
